Self harm and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy DBT

DBT helps you to become more aware of your emotions and learn healthy ways of dealing with them. The main purpose of this therapy is to help you break the cycle of feeling very strong emotions such as being vulnerable and worthless. It helps you to learn that your emotions are acceptable and ways to be open to new ideas or other people’s opinions that may be different to yours

The emphasis on learning to regulate your emotions and distress tolerance often makes it the therapy of choice for self harm as it often a response to distress and coping with strong emotions
