Self harm and creativity

When communicating through spoken words feels impossible art offers another way to express yourself and redirect urge to self harm.

It may offer other benefits that you may not get with other coping techniques. 1- a sense of control as you choose what to express and how 2- when finished you have a record of your feelings you can then destroy if you wish. It helps process painful emotions.

You may also find yourself in a flow state. In this state hunger, exhaustion, pain, fear, emotional distress dwindle and fade into back ground. It can also boost motivation, satisfaction and other positive feelings.

Any kind of creative activity can help you get your feelings out in the open. Drawing, painting, doodling, adult colouring books, moulding clay, writing your feelings down, even journaling and expressing yourself through poetry which i particularly advocate.
